CED530 Week 1

I'm really excited about this class. I think it's going to be fun creating work for digital story telling. HOW COOL! This is so funny-----I thought I was the queen of presentations for my classes. I thought they were so ........... cool, engaging, fun, interactive........but after doing some of the homework and readings we were assigned, I now realize that I was wrong. HA HA
I admit to using PowerPoint presentation in my classroom. I thought it was a great tool and the kids seem to enjoy it. I make sure I add games, links, movie clips and pictures to my presentations. One thing I found very interesting and my mind keeps going back to it, is that the left side of the brain is emotional, musical, and moody and the left side is dexterity, facts and hard data. Thus, you can wreck the communication process if your not using logical information. Makes sense, but I never really gave it that deep of thought.

  1. Christy,
I thought my presentations were pretty good too until I read the readings for the week. Wow...I have a lot to improve on! I don't use them very often, but every once in a while. How often do you incorporate them into your teaching? I wish I had MORE time to work on them and make them so more appealing and useful. So hopefully we will learn some new tricks in this class.

  2. I honestly haven't had to do a lot of presentations. I'm trying to think back to the last PowerPoint I did. I really can't recall. I do know that it wasn't very engaging.

I tend to agree that we tend to want to use all of the whistles-and-bells that tend to distract from the purpose. When you have kids make presentations, do you direct them away from all the extraneous features? I always tried to do that and explain that CONTENT and slides that make their presentation more easily understood is more important ant. I always felt all of the “cool stuff” took away from the meat of the presentation.

  3. Christy - I, too, thought I had pretty good powerpoint presentations. But over the past year or so, as I've become more exposed to other presentation styles, I find myself liking powerpoint less and less. In my blog, I said that I've had to sit through 50+ slideshows (when I worked in the private sector before becoming a teacher). This was not fun! Now, my students learn how to do powerpoints in 4th grade and that is the only presentation technique they use. Thankfully, some of our high school teachers are starting to "think outside the box" and use moviemaker and photostory, but I'd really like to have my students try Animoto. I've seen great presentations on Animoto...have you tried it?

  4. It's great that you understand that right and left brain don't always work together. Yet I think in a story we can help them communicate and bridge - what are your thoughts?
