Week 3 CED510 Managing a computer

Talking about viruses and computer protection last night really made me think about my computers. I know I should be more aware of what I'm doing and how often I update and scan my computers. Sometimes my school computer runs really slow. I know I should run a scan more often, or clean my cookies and delete files I don't use. I think the upcoming assignments will really open my eyes to why we should protect our computers. I guess I just do what I need to do and I never think about maintenance. I should! Our computer tech wants us to run a full scan at least 3 times a month. Also, we need to check for updates. I think about the things I do at school and wonder why we never do them at home. LOL Another goal of mine is backing up everything. I really need to do that!!!

  1. Hi Christy - I found it interesting that your IT person asks you to do the scans 3x a month & check for updates. Our computers at school are all set up on a program that this is done on a schedule set by the IT director...I imagine many teachers probably don't follow the advice/recommendation to do the scans & updates 3 times a month which could cause lots of problems.

  2. Hi Christy, how true! Our network at school is so protected though, there isn't much that we are allowed to do. I believe to be one of those things that we spend so much time at work doing things on the computer, teaching using technology, that when we get home, the last thing we want to think about doing is turning on the computer. I often look at it and tell myself, "wow, there is so much to get done on there, but I just don't have the energy to sit in front of a screen again."

My wife and I just ordered a backup drive from CDW and we have just begun a real process of backing up our files. The drive was only a few hundred dollars, but now we have peace of mind knowing that our most important files are backed up on a redundant 2TB hard drive. :)

  3. Christy, you really made me think about how I could be a better manager of my system at school. On my blog, I kind of had a cop-out attitude about school and how the tech person takes care of it for me. I rarely run scans or delete cookies at school, which I should. I'll definitely have to start being more proactive like I am at home.

  4. I, too, am a little surprised that your systems are not set for automatic updates and scheduled scans. Leaving this in the hands of the users can create problems. You've identified an important problem.
